A family in Shambitsi village, Ingoste, Navakholo Constituency, Kakamega County, is appealing to the government to exhume their relative’s body for a fresh post-mortem. They claim the initial autopsy report was withheld, leaving them uncertain about the true cause of his death.

Hancok Omwaka, 34, was reportedly attacked on January 4th by more than 15 individuals armed with crude weapons at his homestead. The attack allegedly stemmed from a dispute over unpaid debts involving money and a cow. Omwaka sustained severe injuries, including head trauma, facial injuries, a gouged-out eye, and broken fingers. He succumbed to his injuries on January 6th while receiving treatment at Kakamega County Referral Hospital.

The family alleges that the suspects remain free and accuse local police and administrators of failing to act.

Roselyne Khasandi, Omwaka’s widow, said her husband had received multiple threats before the attack. “He was accused of being a thief, but he was not a criminal. My husband was attacked in his own home and left behind young children,” she said, calling for justice.

She added that attempts to report the threats yielded no results. “We reported the threats, but no action was taken. Instead, we were referred from one police station to another. We feel abandoned and unsafe,” Khasandi lamented.

Elizabeth Andeso Mukabana, Omwaka’s mother, expressed frustration at the lack of progress in the case. “My son was brutally murdered, yet no arrests have been made. The police and administrators have failed us,” she said, urging the government to step in.

The family also claims that they continue to receive death threats. “The suspects have threatened to kill us the same way they killed my brother,” said Geoffrey Omwaka, the deceased’s brother.

The situation took a violent turn when angry residents burned down the suspects’ homes, accusing them of being involved in other attacks and murders within the community.

The family is now demanding justice, a detailed report from a fresh post-mortem, and protection from further harm. Authorities have assured them that investigations are ongoing and pledged to ensure their security.
