Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa has lauded the court’s decision allowing the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), terming it a vital step in bolstering the country’s democratic processes.
Speaking at a Pentecostal Assemblies of God rally held at Amalemba Primary School in Shirere Ward, Lurambi Subcounty, Governor Barasa emphasized the significance of electoral reforms in ensuring transparency and fairness.
“The restructuring of IEBC is a critical process aimed at enhancing electoral credibility. I appreciate the court’s role in fostering reforms that strengthen democracy,” he stated.
The IEBC reconstitution issue arose following the mass resignation of commissioners in 2022 after the contentious presidential election, which was marred by division among the commissioners over the final results. This led to a push for reforms to rebuild public trust in the commission. The court’s recent ruling clears the way for the enactment of laws governing the appointment of new commissioners, a process seen as pivotal in ensuring a credible electoral body ahead of future elections.
The governor, urged leaders to focus on initiatives that promote growth and unity rather than engaging in divisive or unproductive criticism. He stressed that collaboration is key to achieving meaningful progress, particularly in implementing transformative programs such as the Social Health Authority (SHA) in Kakamega County.
Governor Barasa also called for unity among leaders, emphasizing the need to set aside political differences and work together for the benefit of county residents. “Our collective efforts are crucial for improving livelihoods and delivering essential services. Let us prioritize the people’s needs over political ambitions,” he urged.
He further cautioned against early political campaigns, warning that premature politicking could derail development priorities. The governor called for patience and a focus on addressing pressing issues affecting the county.
Additionally, Governor Barasa praised his collaboration with President William Ruto in ensuring every household in Lurambi is connected to electricity. He described the partnership as a demonstration of the benefits of unity between national and county governments in delivering grassroots development.
“We remain committed to working closely with the national government to improve the quality of life for Kakamega residents,” the governor affirmed.
Governor Barasa was accompanied by area MCA David Igunza, members of the county assembly, and executive officers during the event.
