By Rasto Wamalwa

Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, Ali Hassan Joho, has issued a stern warning to those involved in illegal mining activities in Kakamega, stressing that such actions are damaging the country’s economy and the environment.

Speaking at the Aquaculture Business Development Programme (ABDP) grants issuance event in Kakamega, CS Joho called on security officers to remain vigilant and take action against illegal mining. He emphasized the government’s commitment to intensifying monitoring and enforcement efforts to curb unregulated mining activities.

“The government will step up its efforts to monitor and enforce laws to combat illegal mining. Law enforcement agencies will take action against individuals and companies engaged in unlawful mineral extraction,” said Joho.

On environmental concerns, the CS highlighted the negative impact of illegal mining, including deforestation, land degradation, and water pollution, all of which harm ecosystems and the surrounding communities. He stressed the importance of sustainable and regulated mining practices to protect natural resources.

“The government’s goal is to formalize mining operations so that both investors and local communities can benefit fairly. I urge Kenyans not to sell their minerals at cheap prices,” he added.

CS Joho also called on miners to acquire legal licenses and comply with national mining regulations. He appealed to the County Security team, led by Commissioner Mwangi Meru, to be proactive in safeguarding communities living near mining areas.

“Mining companies and artisanal miners must collaborate with both county and national authorities to ensure responsible mining practices. The government will increase inspections in mining regions, including Kakamega, which is known for its gold deposits and other valuable minerals, to combat mineral piracy,” Joho said.

Furthermore, Joho encouraged stakeholders in the mining sector to formally register their operations and adhere to best practices to avoid legal consequences that could result in the closure of their mining sites.
