Political leaders from Kakamega County have urged President William Ruto to appoint Cooperatives and MSMEs Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya as his running mate in the 2027 elections.

The leaders argue that Oparanya’s vast political experience and strong development track record make him the ideal choice to strengthen Ruto’s re-election bid.

Speaking at a public gathering in Khwisero Constituency, Khwisero MP Christopher Aseka, Ikolomani MP Benard Shinali, Shinyalu MP Fred Ikana, and Navakholo MP Emanuel Wangwe praised Oparanya’s leadership, citing his achievements as a former Butere MP and later as Governor of Kakamega.

They highlighted his role in advancing infrastructure, improving healthcare services, and implementing economic empowerment programs in the region.

MP Christopher Aseka emphasized that Oparanya’s influence and governance experience make him a strategic asset for Ruto’s administration.

He noted that other communities were positioning their preferred candidates for the deputy presidency, urging the Luhya community to rally behind Oparanya.

Kakamega Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda echoed similar sentiments, stating that Oparanya’s expertise in financial management and governance would strengthen the Kenya Kwanza administration.

She credited him with transforming Kakamega County and argued that his inclusion in the 2027 presidential race as Ruto’s running mate would be a significant boost.

The leaders also pointed out that Western Kenya holds a substantial voter base, making it a crucial battleground in national politics.

MP Benard Shinali stressed that appointing Oparanya as running mate would solidify the region’s support for Ruto.

He noted that Kakamega is among the most populous rural counties, making it a strategic region for any presidential candidate.

Navakholo MP Emanuel Wangwe added that having a leader from Western Kenya in such a high-ranking position would ensure the region’s representation in top government decision-making.

He urged the Kenya Kwanza administration to consider Oparanya, citing his ability to unite people and deliver tangible results.

This push for Oparanya’s appointment comes amid rising political realignments and discussions ahead of the 2027 elections.

While Oparanya has yet to publicly respond to the proposal, his influence in Western Kenya remains strong, and his potential inclusion on Ruto’s ticket could reshape the region’s political landscape.

Political analysts believe that the choice of a running mate will be critical in determining the election’s outcome.

Whether President Ruto will heed the call and select Oparanya as his deputy remains to be seen, but the endorsement by Western Kenya leaders underscores the region’s growing political significance.
